There are a few games and an eBook already installed, although by signing up to Vtech I received 3 Virtual coins allowing me to purchase 3 more items of my choice.
The Downloadable Games Books are great value for money, all being ?2.99 (This may change when new downloads are available).
Tips:
Make sure you have some rechargeable batteries (4*AA) but I would recommend 8 with 4 on charge whilst 4 in use.
There is a Power Supply & in car charger may be advisable to get.
Make sure you have a SD Card to put your child's Music,Photo's, downloaded games on to, the innotab will take up to 16GB and some people have said that 2GB is enough I don't agree for the extra couple of pounds get as big as you can.
You can also play Video's on this device but I have yet to find anywhere that advises what format it will accept (Waiting feedback from VTech).
Overall:
This is a fantastic toy for my Daughter and I would recommend it to anyone.

I have however done alot of playing and setting up the device ready.

It uses motion and touch for all the games and apps, like a phone does. As every game as motion built in, in some way, this is the part I feel my son will love the most (he also has a leappad, but not much motion on them yet).

The cartridge games have a ebook included and 5 games / creative apps which are all character based.

Downloadable apps are also available to download for a small cost although the current libarary isnt alot.

If you install a SD card (I currently have a 4gb in for testing purpose) you can download movies of your own choice for free, music, photos etc... I have currently added 3 full length Disney movies, 5 peppa pig episodes, 5 fireman sam episodes and 2 other smaller cartoon movies. I have put on 3 music albums and also lots of family photos (taken from my 12m camera) and I still have over 2gb left.

I love the colour and pop app, which is a colouring book app (leappad lacks this) and once you have coloured your picture you can move it around and take a photo off it.

Although there isnt a camera, some apps allow you to take virtual photos. You can move around a picture to take a "photo" of the things you want.

Calendar app, notepad app, stopwatch, calculator and address book are all added extras, which my 4 year old wont understand at the moment, but will be a great added bonus when he is old enough.

It comes preinstalled with a ebook, 2 games and you get 3 vcoins to download 3 of your choice.

42 of 44 people found the following review helpful: 3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but needs improvement, 4 Oct 2011 = Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars  This review is from: VTech InnoTab (Blue) (Toy) Just received it yesterday and generally I think it's good, my son likes it too.
The apps and games are great too, and transfering music to the device is easy.

What I didn't like, is that the video and photo transfer is not working yet (the Vtech software just says these features are coming soon...).

But what really frustrating is the way the touchscreen works:
it's really difficult to click an icon, because if your fingers moves a bit during "clicking", then the software interprets it as a swipe gesture and moves the icon a bit. So you really must be careful not to move your finger in any horizontal direction while clicking the icons, otherwise the app wouldn't start. It's not easy even for an adult, not too mention a child, who wouldn't hold the device so steady.
I wish there was some kind of calibration of the screen's sensitivity possible, to solve this problem.

Apart from the above annoyances, it would a great toy and learning tool!

He loves it, you can switch it between modes, lower case / uppercase / drawing etc. If you press a letter it then talks you through forming it and the child follows the lights. The screen is like a magnadoodle and is erased with a slider. My son is very proud of himself and he uses it frequently.
Good toy, thank you leapfrog! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?

It is lots of fun and great for encouraging children to maintain attention on literacy based activities. As a teacher I am unhappy with how the pen needs to be held and positioned to accurately trace the lights, also the instructions for formation of some of the letters is incorrect. I am possibly being picky because of my teacher background, I love the lowercase magnetic phonic set leapfrog do and I love this product for getting children engaged in literacy based activities. He loved it straight away. Its easy to use, and has really helped him write his letters. Also very easy to take in the car & to friends houses. It has afew settings - tracing capital & small letters, & shapes/pictures. It also has guess the letter, as the toy starts to draw it. My 3 year old daughter also uses it, and to my amazement has picked it up really quickly, as is doing really well on it. Its so good, I've recommended it to friends, and bought it for 2 presents (for a 3 year old girl, and an 8 year old who has special needs). The only slight problem with it is the slider that wipes it clean - occasionally you have to wiggle the slider to get it across - but it seems to right itself quickly. I'd highly recommend this toy (for 3 to 5 year olds)- one of the best things they've had. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?

#5: A Breath of Snow and Ashes

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

459 of 485 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars The old and great Gabaldon is back, September 30, 2005 I was one of those many readers who loved the first four books but was harshly critical of The Fiery Cross, her fifth book. However, this book is terrific. First of all Claire and Jamie are more present in this book with all their love and passion, fierceness and courage, which had been dimly expressed in The Fiery Cross. Brianna and Roger are more believable and loving towards each other - Roger is less of a wimp, Brianna has gotten over her whinny self, and Jemmy is a terrific kid, not just a pooping, nursing machine.

Ordinarily, I am impatient of a lot of description, do a lot of skimming, and want to get down to the meat and potatoes of the plot. But not in this book. Every vignette, even if not central to the plot, is vivid and fascinating, giving the reader a glimpse into life in those days. I found myself devouring every word, enjoying the journey rather than being in a rush to the destination. Gabaldon is just such an incredible writer; such an imagination - you find it hard to believe she wasn't actually there. And when Jamie says things like "If I die, dinna follow me. The bairns will need ye. Stay for them. I can wait." I find myself crying and feeling like an idiot, since this is fiction, but it touches me so.

Enjoy!

It was with a great deal of satisfaction that I finished this book (at 2:30 this morning), because I finally had answers to a lot of the things I'd been wondering about.

Unlike Fiery Cross, this book is much faster moving, with no long descriptions of diaper-changing. Brianna and Roger seem to have found their places at Fraser's Ridge . . . Brianna is much more likeable, much more mature, and a lot less whiny. And, of course, Claire and Jamie are featured very prominently . . . it's still their series. There's action, adventure, abduction, illness, war, and of course, sex.

A book more in the tradition of Voyager and Drums of Autumn . . . I wasn't disappointed.

141 of 154 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars An addictive addition to Gabaldon's Outlander series, October 5, 2005 Bodice-ripper romance? Check. Historical fiction with oodles of period detail? Double-check. Time-traveling fantasy? You bet. A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES (actually, all six volumes in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series) combines most of the genres I love, which means I couldn't put it down --- and at a hefty 992 pages, that's saying a lot. While immersed, I felt I was never far from Fraser's Ridge, the North Carolina homestead where Jamie Fraser, an exiled Scotsman, and his wife Claire, doctor and displaced 20th-century person, make their home. There are two other refugees from the contemporary world in the community: the Frasers' daughter Brianna (conceived in the 18th century, born in the 20th), and her husband Roger --- plus assorted saints, ruffians, eccentrics, rogues, floozies and fanatics.

Gabaldon's conceit, for those new to the books, is that certain individuals are able to pass from one century to another by means of ancient circles of standing stones. In OUTLANDER, the first volume, Claire time-travels quite by accident while vacationing in the Highlands; from 1946 she is hurtled back some 200 years, when the Jacobites, Scottish supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie, were fighting to oust the English and reestablish their own king. She meets and marries Jamie, but after the rebels are crushed at Culloden in 1745 and he is condemned to death, she returns to modern life (and her bemused 20th-century husband) to save her unborn child.

Sounds pretty crazy, but Gabaldon makes it plausible because her research is so meticulous and her characters so sympathetic: heroic, yet attractively flawed. You get to know the central quartet --- Jamie, Claire, Brianna and Roger --- especially well, since they take turns narrating the book. Okay, I'll admit that the two couples' literally timeless devotion and undying ardor (sex scenes galore!) are so idealized that lots of plot action is essential to keep the reader from becoming bored and/or skeptical: Somebody (Claire twice and Brianna once) is always getting abducted by villains and rescued by the clan.

But A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES, though a close cousin of the historical romance (think a more prolix version of Philippa Gregory), has another dimension, thanks to the sci-fi element. A modern sensibility and vision lurk within the pre-electric interiors and wild, uncharted scenery of Fraser's Ridge --- Brianna dreams of hot running water; Claire struggles with the concept that she is Jamie's property; Roger, originally an historian, looks ahead to the triumph of the revolution and the bitter fate of the Native Americans. The book reminds us how dangerous it was to be on the "right" side of the Anglo-American conflict, and how hard and labor-intensive it was to accomplish the simplest tasks of everyday life. It shows us Claire and Brianna recreating resources we take for granted, from matches to ether (Claire's medical adventures, wherein she combines contemporary knowledge with herbal traditions, is my favorite part of the series; in this volume she handles a breech birth, fixes a twisted hand, and treats syphilis with a home-grown form of penicillin). The women characters are not only amazingly strong, but also possess a feminist consciousness that they bring to bear on an impressive number of unwed pregnancies and other local scandals. And always the modern refugees are wondering whether there are other time-travelers like themselves --- whether, in fact, every invention is really a reinvention by people from the future.

The temporal ambiguity of the book also gives it emotional depth. All the characters, time-travelers or political exiles, have a feeling of displacement and a deep longing for the home they've parted from. Jamie, contemplating the "glorious, terrifying" emptiness of the land, becomes aware of a "more terrifying emptiness within": He "had said good-bye to Scotland at the rail of the Artemis, knowing full well it was likely his last sight of the place. And yet the notion that he would never set foot there again had never fully settled on him 'til this moment."' Our stories of pioneers and immigrants have passed into myth, so it is easy to forget how much courage it took to break with the old and familiar and sail off to a whole new continent.

A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES isn't great literature. It's way, way too long; full of breathless prose, cornball archaic language, and Gaelic phrases; easy to make fun of or relegate to the status of guilty pleasure. And yet, there is something so honest, rich and complete about the alternative worlds Gabaldon creates that I think she is a kind of genius. I can't wait to find out what happens next in the story of the Frasers and their kin (the end is quite a cliffhanger).

If you're already addicted to Claire and Jamie, this review probably isn't even necessary. But for Outlander "virgins," I have some advice: Pick up a copy of THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION, Gabaldon's handbook to the series, which includes not only synopses of the first few books but also family trees, character analyses, research minutiae, a Gaelic glossary and grammar, and more --- all the insider info a hardcore fan could want and a newcomer could need.

#8: Treachery In Death

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

86 of 90 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars A great and very entertaining how to get the bad cops story, February 16, 2011 After closing a case as primary Detective Peabody is on a roll and excited for more. But when she overhears two cops talking about illegal activities and murder she is shocked.
Lieutenant Eve Dallas is furious when she learns what Peabody overheard because she hates nothing more than cops who misuse their power to steal and kill. Together with the cops she trusts and her husband Roarke Eve will do everything in her power to end the reign of the dirty cops.

"Treachery in Death" is a classic how to get the bad guys story and I enjoyed that it was not as emotional as some of the other books in the In Death series. I liked that the book concentrated on Eve and her team's investigation. I loved seeing them work together and especially how Eve handled the dirty cops was awesome.
Furthermore I liked that we got to see more of Webster and I was happy to read what happened in his life. I also liked the interactions between him and Eve. The investigation of the case showed all the reasons why Eve is such a great cop. She is honest, wears her badge with pride, she doesn't misuse her position and does everything in her power to solve her cases.
I loved the scenes in which Eve manipulated the bad guys and especially their leader. And I enjoyed the interactions between Whitney and Eve and how the commander handled the dirty cops and always supported Eve. As always I also enjoyed the lighter moments of the story, for example a quarrel between Eve and Roarke and a hilarious situation in which Eve has to watch over baby Belle (so cute and made me laugh out loud).
Even after so many parts in this series I'm always super excited to read the next book because the stories still are fascinating and feel fresh. The next book in the series is called "From New York to Dallas" (one time name change) and I guess we will learn some more about Eve's past in it. I will definitely get some tissues handy to read it.

cover
I like the UK cover and the feeling of being followed fits to the story.

final appraisal
"Treachery in Death" is a great, thrilling and very entertaining book. I loved that this time it was all about how to get the bad guys and to see the dynamics between Eve and her team. This part of the series is one of my favourites and I can't wait for more.

PS
I bought my copy (UK version) of this book and was lucky because it was released a bit early in Germany.

27 of 28 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars - Series keeps going strong, February 22, 2011 Naked in a shower in an old, unused gym in the basement of Cop Central, Peabody overhears two cops arguing about their own corruption and conspiracy in murder. One of them is a lieutenant, the daughter of a decorated ex-cop who is a legend and Whitney's predecessor. Knowing that if she is discovered, she is dead, she waits out the tense moments until their argument is over and they are gone. Shaken, she contacts McNabb and Eve to let them know what she has heard. This kicks off an investigation and internal sting operation spearheaded by Eve and in cooperation with their Internal Affairs Bureau.

After the disappointment of the last book, Indulgence in Death, which I felt was retread of an earlier book and lacked any real police procedure, I was crossing my fingers that this series and this author hadn't finally run out of steam. Thank God that isn't the case. This book was tightly plotted and a joy to read. From the moment Eve learns about what Peabody overhead, she ready to seriously kick some a$$ and the story goes into high gear and never looks back.

Eve takes a very strong dislike to her prey and begins to play with her like a cat with a mouse. What was so fun about this book was that Eve and her team were always steps ahead of the band of dirty cops they were out to get. Not once did the Bad Lieutenant (ba-da-dump!) have a clue how much trouble she was in. She was nicely outwitted and outplayed.

The entire book was a sting operation wrapped in police procedure. The climax was a total, fist pumping high. From the moment Eve gives the go ahead for her team to start phase one you just sit back and cheer on how satisfactorily they close out the sting.

Not a lot of romance or personal development in this one, although there is a sweet interlude where Eve and Roarke take a few moments in what can only be described as a sighingly romantic walk through their grounds. Also Webster gets a new romantic interest.

Really good installment!

20 of 22 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and solid, February 24, 2011 Treachery in death is light on the mystery - we know who the bad guy is, and what the crime is, from the first chapter - but moves at a lightning pace. Most of the story is Eve building her case. Even though she can identify the villain, she still has to gather the evidence and figure out how wide the corruption spreads and who all is involved. (I wonder if the next book will touch on the fallout of this case. As a reader, it's easy to imagine the horrific ramifications of a years-long, widespread police corruption case. Ouch.)

Eve's personal story doesn't get a whole lot of attention, but there's a humorous scene with Eve, Mavis, and Bella, and a sweet scene between Roarke and Eve. The most significant personal aspect for me was actually professional also: Eve muses on how the type of woman she is sets the tone for the type of cop she is, but also the type of BOSS she is. And as others have mentioned, Robb seems to be laying some groundwork for a happy personal turn for IAB rat Don Webster.

I thought the tightness of the story suffered just a bit at the very end - the last 70 pages or so - and the climax could have used a bit more punch. (Heh.) But overall I found this one to be really enjoyable and kind of rewhetted my appetite for these characters and this series (which had begun to wane in the last couple years).

We bought the blue equivalent camera for our 5 year son. His sister has one of the much earlier models.

Initial views
- The Camera grabs their attention straight away. It has some very simple to use buttons which take no time to navigate.
- It really is a point and click which meant that straight away he was taking pictures
- Batteries are included, so we avoided the usual panic-scramble while we tried to get it working

Durability
- The camera has been dropped MANY times, but you'd never know. The rubber handles and edges protect all the delicate bits
- Screen has somehow avoided scratches and a brief wipe with a cloth brings it back to life

Features
- Videos are really fun. My children have recorded several shows/performances with relative ease
- It comes with games which keep them relatively amused. They obviously don't compare to something like a DS etc, but since we're too mean to buy our children one of these, the camera games are going down quite well! ;)
- The robot voice changer gets as much use as the camera now. Tends to get a little annoying for the adults tho....
- Memory space is huge. We've had it a while now and only `archived' off once.
- Batteries last surprising long. The 4 are stored in the grips to the side and only need changing once every 2 weeks, and that's through heavy use and rechargeable batteries.
- Adding backgrounds is very good. It's slightly more complicated, but my son gets a lot of enjoyment out of turning Daddy into a pirate etc. You have the ability to add elements at a time. Eg moustache, eye-patch, etc.

Quality
- You can't really fault the camera considering most of the piccies are taken while moving or whilst being dropped.
- The screen is very clear and you get a very good view of the photos taken

All-in-all, we think this was an excellent purchase and don't regret it at all.

As with most kids cameras the quality of the photos are not up to a standard camera's standard, but I would imagine that this does not bother the average toddler in the slightest. They are more interrested in taking photos and editing it in one of the many fun ways than they are in printing it out. My daughter also loves the voice altering microphone and the built in games. The product is sturdy, easy to use, good value for money and I know my kids finds playing with it lots of fun. I would recommend it to anybody. The picture quality is not fantastic and we have not yet tried to download onto the PC or TV but she loves the fact that she can click away and put frames and makes funny faces out of us. I've ordered 3 in the past, 2 which I had to return with the same problem - the button to press to speak into the walkie talkie broke. However on a major plus side, Amazon have a wonderful return goods service. I had never used this before but I was very impressed indeed with Amazon. One set was immediately replaced and the other refunded with postage paid etc - excellent. I would persist however, my boys really have a lot of fun with these items. The ends of the tree are differently coloured - this will give the final crystals different shades. The tree then is to be fixed into a small plastic pool, which will contain the "magic" liquid. This is kept into a sachet. The box also contains complete instruction in English.
Well, as to perform your tree, set up the body you need pouring the liquid into the pool, as to have it absorbed by the carboard. In about 6 hours you'll have your small "Magic Tree" done. Even before that time, you should start seeing progress.
It is a very impressive toy, as you wouldn't imagine crystals could come up from what at first sight looks like water. Is actually a toxic chemical product (I mean, "toxic" as your washing-up liquid is, probably), so do explain that to your kids and do not let the little ones play with in inappropriate ways (as some of them sometimes do). Said this, is very impressive and surprising, as I already said, and your kids will probably pass by over and over again to keep an eye on what's happening.
Then, the only thing is that the crystals, in my experience, were not very durable (what a pity) but for the expense it was more than what I expected. So, nice small cheapy toy, good to entertain elementary school or just curious boys and girls :) Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?

#2: How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars for a cute new series, February 24, 2011 Mo Wenstein has moved from the south to Grundy, Alaska to get a fresh start. Most welcome her into their small town, especially the towns bachelor's. All except the constantly grumpy yet very delectable Cooper Graham who doesn't believe Mo has what it takes to live in Alaska. Things between them change when Mo finds Cooper on her porch with a bear trap on his ankle. As odd as that is, it's nothing compared to when Cooper changes into a wolf before Mo's eyes.

Cooper is Alpha of his pack but after a bloody encounter with another pack, he exiles himself to Grundy. Both him and his wolf are drawn to Mo but he uses his bad attitude to try and push her away. There have been wolf attacks around Grundy and Cooper starts to believe he is the one responsible. Though she has her doubts at times, Mo knows that Cooper isn't the one behind the attacks and is set on finding the one responsible. Not exactly what she planned on when she moved to Alaska but who said love wasn't complicated?

How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf isn't a fast paced, action packed read but is more character based with it's share of family drama and werewolf politics. Mo and Cooper both have come to Grundy to get away from their families and have a fresh start. Mo's parents are forever hippies. Everything she's done since she was a teenager was some sort of a rebellion against them. She has moved to Grundy to end that and live her life for her own reasons. Cooper didn't want to be alpha and after an encounter with another pack turned deadly, he came to Grundy to get away from it all. Mo doesn't take Cooper's attitude and Cooper challenges Mo each day. Their relationship isn't all rainbows and kisses but they still work really great together. Mo has the type of personality that very few can help but love and even when Cooper is at his most grumpy, you can't help but fall for him. It probably helps that he's easy on the eyes. I did think Mo took to what Cooper was a bit too easily, even with her parents being as opened minded as they are.

When Cooper's grandfather falls ill, he reluctantly goes home for a visit and we learn more about his pack and some of why he left to begin with. Almost no one was happy with Cooper's departure so there is family conflict where this part of the story is concerned. Back in Grundy people are being attacked around town by a wolf and since Cooper can't remember much when he is in his wolf form, he assumes it's himself. Mo understandably has her doubts but in the end knows it's not Cooper and does what she can to convince him to believe that also. I was a little thrown off by the end and liked that I wasn't able to predict everything.

Grundy has it's share of quirky characters that add funny moments to the story. How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf has the right amount of comedy, drama, paranormal and romance without any of it being too over the top. It's the first book Molly Harper's new paranormal romance werewolf series and I look forward to reading the next installment.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of chuckles and, yes, plenty of naked werewolves, February 23, 2011 Oh come on, a naked werewolf? How could I resist? Despite the embarrassment of having to ask the guy at the bookstore to help me find a copy, I just had to read this latest series starter from 'Nice Girls' author Molly Harper. It was well worth the blushes (his and mine) because Harper delivers a cute, chuckle-filled adventure as Southerner and former hippies' child Mo relocates to a small remote Alaskan town to 'find herself' and I even though I've read a lot of great stuff this year How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf is now one of my favorites of 2011.

Even though naked werewolves are mentioned in the first sentence, Harper makes us anticipate said event for a good long time before she actually delivers on the the werewolf booty. The surly wolf in flannel and blue jeans is only one of the residents of Grundy AK who take notice when Mo joins their small (mostly male) community. And though there are romance elements and some steamy stuff, it is really Mo's blossoming and finding her place in Grundy, and forming friendships along with her sassy dialog and musings which form the bulk of the story. She has a great 'voice' which is the make or break in a first person story. Mo is strong and stubborn without being either kick butt or too stupid to live - which means she's more than capable of holding her own - for the most part - against an alpha male and his furry kin.

So a rare five stars from me for pure enjoyment and I am looking forward to Harper's next offering and lamenting that my copy of the book didn't have the preview of The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf promised on the back cover *sniff*

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Witty Paranormal Romance, February 24, 2011 What I Can Tell You:
I can only imagine the kind of book Molly could have written this year. It was a ridiculous winter.
Mo or Moon, our female lead in How to Flirt With A Naked Werewolf is a girl after my own heart. She takes chances, she is fun, witty, sweet and can kick ass and take a punch!

When Mo finds herself looking for a change after a broken engagement she packs up and heads to the wide open spaces of Grundy. Where she finds a job, makes friend's easily and eventually comes face to face with the blue-green glowing eyes of a wolf/man.

The story is quick and witty. Mo has a way with words, especially when it comes to the male anatomy. I loved it. Research Werewolf girlfriends on the internet? Too funny.

The cover is adorable, giving hint to how fun and clever the story is.

I am looking forward to the sequel; THE ART OF SEDUCING A NAKED WEREWOLF, due out next month.

If you like paranormal romances, this is a great book.

#8: Dragonfly in Amber

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

233 of 238 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars In A Word - OUTSTANDING!!, January 31, 2004 I usually do not care for sequels, whether in novels or films. After reading Diana Gabaldon's wonderful book, "Outlander," I was sure she could not come up with another book to match the first. I was wrong and "Dragonfly In Amber" is an exception to my rule and an exceptional book. Once you begin to read, you will find yourself absorbed immediately and probably forget the novel's length (900+ pages). In fact, you may find yourself wishing it were longer.

There are two major storylines here. One takes place in the 18th century. Claire Randall, who had traveled back in time from post WWII Scotland to a Scotland preparing for the restoration of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, (Bonnie Prince Charlie) to the throne, had married James Fraser and confided to him the truth of her time travels. She also told him of the coming disaster of the Battle of Culloden Moor, (1745), and its terrible aftermath for all of Scotland. Together they do everything in their power to halt the inevitable uprising, including move to Paris to become part of the Prince's entourage and perhaps effect a change in history through their relationship with the Jacobites living in France. The relationship developed between Claire and Jamie continues to grow in this book. Their intensely passionate love and close friendship is extremely moving. Although James is a very strong and competent person, Claire with her strength of character, independence, resourcefulness and nursing skills moves adeptly through another time period and is as indispensable to James as he is to her. We travel with both of them, from the Scottish highlands to the pomp of the French court, as they attempt to impact history and continue on together with a love that transcends the boundaries of time.

The second and parallel plot takes place in 1968. Culloden is 200 years in the past. James had sent Claire back to the future to keep her and their unborn child safe from Scotland's fate right before the doomed battle and, they both believed, Jamie's inevitable death during the fight. Claire still feels the bitterness of the intrigues, betrayals, murders, treason and violence that were so much a part of her life with James as they fought together to spare Scotland from its future. Twenty years have passed and Claire, now a doctor, and her daughter Brianna, travel to Scotland from Boston. Brianna does not know the truth about her mother's history, before her birth, nor who her real father is. Claire's 20th-century husband is now dead and she is determined to discover what happened to James, their family and friends. He was her soulmate and the only man she ever loved. If there is a chance at all to find her Jamie, or at least discover what happened to him, she is will do it.

Once again Ms. Gabaldon deftly portrays 18th century Scotland and France and immerses the reader in another time with her superb historical research and writing style. Her characters, major and minor, complex and simple, grow and develop as you read. Many of them are introduced in "The Outlander," but some remarkable new figures emerge from this novel also. Many of them are bound to capture your heart.

I don't know if this book could stand alone without reading "Outlander" first. And since there is so much to gain by reading both books, and continuing on to number three, I don't know why anyone would wish to do so...unless this book is purchased without the knowledge of the prequel. Gabaldon's "Outlander" series is a major epic and this novel is one of the best in the series. It is jam-packed with adventure, accurate historic detail, romance, friendship, and more from a most unusual perspective. Highly recommended!

71 of 74 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars A LOVE THAT TRANSCENDS TIME CONTINUES TO RIVET THE READER..., May 5, 2001 This is the second in a series of time travel, adventure/romance books by the author. There are four such novels published to date in what is hoped to be a series of six books. These novels have engaged readers everywhere, because of the author's masterful storytelling, as well as for the superlative use of historical detail which is woven into the tapestry in this most intriguing of stories.

While the core of the story is about a love that transcends time, it would be a disservice to label it a romance, as it is much more than that. It is a wonderful adventure story interspersed with actual historical events and authentic period detail. It is this attention to such matters by the skillful pen of the author that renders these books three dimensional and so enjoyable. They are positively addictive!

The love of the ages that binds these books is the love that twentieth century Claire Randall has for the eighteenth century Scottish highland warrior, James Fraser. Those of you who read the first book in the series, "Outlander", know that in 1945, Claire, an Englishwoman and combat nurse during World War II, is reunited with her husband, Frank, after the war. While on a second honeymoon in Scotland, she visits a strange, flat topped hill in the highlands of Scotland, where a forbidding stone circle draws her. Touching one of the stones, she is hurled through a vortex in time and finds herself in eighteenth century Scotland, where she meets a brave and brawny, red headed Scot, James Fraser, with whom she falls completely in love, body and soul. Finding herself thrust into the midst of clan warfare and intrigue, she and her beloved 'Jamie' have enough adventures to last a lifetime, which makes for a riveting story.

This book is a continuation of that story. It is told from the perspective of the twentieth century where Claire, who is now a doctor, has lived for the past twenty years. Upon the death of her twentieth century husband, Frank, Claire returns to Scotland with her grown, red headed daughter, Brianna. There, she discloses to Brianna the events of her secret past, as well as the truth of whom Brianna's biological father actually is and of the love that Claire bore him.

While in Scotland, however, Claire discovers something that will forever change her future, as well as her past. You see, for the past twenty years, Claire has believed that her beloved 'Jamie' died in the historic battle of Culloden. It was there that the Scottish highlanders bravely fought the English in a misguided attempt to restore Charles Stuart, their bonny Prince Charlie, to the English throne, only to be decimated and branded as Jacobite traitors. It was this very event that she and James Fraser had conspired to change only to fail. It was this failure that brought Claire and 'Jamie' to a crossroad that would force them to part and have Brianna become a denizen of the twentieth century.

This book continues the saga so deftly begun in "Outlander". It tells the story of what happened in the eighteenth century that ultimately caused Claire to leave the love of her life and return to the twentieth century. It recounts the plight of two star crossed lovers who make a desperate and valiant attempt to change the course of history. It regales the reader with the adventures they encounter along the way. It is a story that transports the reader from the turmoil of the Scottish highlands to the intrigue of the French Court.

Readers will be captivated by this amazing and compelling time travel saga.

The BEST Historical Romance Novel EVER!, March 16, 1999 I started this series with Dragonfly In Amber, although it is the 2nd book of the series. I was at a library skimming through and i happened to open up the cover (of the paperback) and saw an artist's depiction of Jamie. WELL, I just had to read the book because Jamie (the drawing)looked so handsome. Anyways, I read the book, and could not believe how AWESOME it was, I actually had a dream about the characters (no lie) because Ms. Gabaldon made it so real . Needless to say, I bought Outlander the next day, and read the entire series back to back. This is the book that started me off though, and I have never felt so strongly attached or so emotional about Jamie and Claire (I can't tell you how many times I burst out laughing or bawled like a baby). It makes me feel like I have a special bond with them somehow, like no one else can intrude in our world. I am a hopeless romantic and have read countless novels, but I am happy to say that Jamie and Claire's stories are the only ones falling apart (from being re-re-re-read of course) BUY THIS BOOK & THE WHOLE SERIES....YOU WILL LOVE IT =) Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?

Diana Gabaldon has created the ultimate escape in The Outlander. Don't let the 850 pages dissuade you. It's the fastest read you'll ever have.

The epic tale begins when Claire Randall, a young combat nurse in World War II, moves to Scotland with her beloved husband to re-ignite their marriage interrupted by the war. Hiking one day, Claire accidentally passes through the stones of an ancient stone circle and wakes up to find herself in 16th century Scotland. Lost, alone, and confused (yet, determined), Claire's path crosses, and is inextricably linked to, a young Highland warrior, James Fraser. (The kind of man women want, and men want to BE.)The story that ensues would make Shakespeare proud--danger, suspense, passion, betrayal, true love, and tragedy. Gabaldon is a master story teller. She shrouds her fantasy in just enough reality as to completely seduce her readers.

The time-travel element as well as the romance, while unconventional for a "serious" historical novel, are handled brilliantly by Gabaldon. Not, for the faint of heart-- the author tackles themes of a violent and sexual nature. However, the story is so realistic and beautifully told, it doesn't come off as a ploy to shock readers. Well-crafted and meticulously researched, The Outlander is historical fiction at it's finest-but never this much fun! The hero and heroine come alive. You'll find yourself living and breathing in their world, anxiously devouring each chapter.

WARNING: have the next three books in the series handy. Once, you turn the last page of Outlander, you won't want to return to the 21st century. I couldn't get to the bookstore fast enough. And, Gabaldon does not disappoint...

436 of 457 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Happily surprised..., December 10, 2001 I must admit, the synopsis on the back of this tome threw me off. I didn't think I would be much interested in a romance novel based on time travel -- it just seemed way too implausible. However, at the persistence of several friends from a book group, I gave this novel a try. I am certainly grateful that I did. Firstly, this is not merely a romance novel. It involves a romance, to be sure, but this romance is not one you'd find again and again in your average Harlequin. This is an original romance, which so completely describes love that I found myself better understanding love than I did at the onset of the novel. When a novel has the capacity to make you understand something as vague as love, you know it is good.
It is also filled with adventure, religion, and human conscience. A historical novel rarely has the ability to make me understand things about my own presence, and yet, Outlander simply did. I was unable to put this book down, as enraptured as I was by the compelling writing.
The character development is beyond any I have lately read. Dianna Gabaldon has a true gift for understanding human emotion and translating it for the rest of us to understand.
If you fear that the plot seems to be a bit too "outlandish" for you, still, give this one a try. While certain aspects may be unbelievable, the reality is, this novel has so much truth to it, you will be amazed. I was. 116 of 124 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Gabaldon Test, January 21, 2000 I don't normally like books written in the first person. I *loved* "Outlander" (known as "Cross Stitch" in New Zealand). I read "Outlander" on the recommendation of a good friend and immediately fell in love with Jamie (as any living, breathing woman would).

The book is rich in history, romance, drama... It has the qualities of a true epic, easily rivalling such classics as "Gone With the Wind".

Claire Randall is the reader's guide into the story and throughout it's sequels. It's through her eyes that we are introduced to the way of life and harsh truths in those times. If you've never been to Scotland, you will be dying to go "Jamie Hunting" by the end of this book.

For new Gabaldon readers, Outlander is the one to start with. Do not even attempt to read any of the sequels first. Even though it is not crucial to read them in order, you will get the most enjoyment by doing so. The second and third books in the series are not nearly as good. It is only the enjoyment of reading about familiar characters that kept me going. Nevertheless, by the time you have read all four books, you will be hungering for more.

"Outlander" is the ultimate Gabaldon test. You will either hate it or love it. If you hate it, you won't read anything by Gabaldon ever again. If you love it, you won't be able to eat, drink or sleep until you have read the others.

I am happy to say that I definitely belong in the latter category.

#7: The Next Always: Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy, Book 1

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

125 of 134 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for fans of cozy, relaxed and lovely romances, November 1, 2011 Beckett Montgomery leads a pretty happy and satisfied life. He enjoys his job as a architect and loves that he, his brothers Ryder & Owen and their mom run a successful construction firm. There's one thing that's missing from his life and that's a chance to get to know Clare Brewster closer. He has had a crush on her since high school but never acted on his feelings.
Clare came book to Boonsboro after her husband was killed and runs her own bookstore in town. Her three sons and she are happy with the life they built and Clare doesn't have the time to date. And she never realized that Beckett is interested in her.
But suddenly things change and the two are no longer just good friends. Will they be able to get their own happy ever after?

Like always I was super excited to read the new books by Nora Roberts and like (nearly) always I loved my reading experience. I enjoyed the relaxed pace, the cozy and lovely setting and the lovely characters. The pace and how the book is built was similar to the books in the bride quartet series which I adore. The pace might be a bit too slow for readers that enjoy fast-paced books, but for me it was just perfect.

Boonsboro is a great place to set the book and thanks to all the little details Nora Roberts added to the story I was able to imagine the town and it's buildings very easily. And of course it's pretty cool that Boonsboro and the buildings described in the book really exist. Hopefully I will one day get the chance to visit the town.

The love story was very sweet and I loved the way it progressed. Especially the way Beckett handled Clare's boys was amazing and so sweet. Both main characters were strong and I'm excited to see more of them in the next two books of the trilogy.

There are two more plot elements in the story and both made it even more interesting. I want to tell you a bit about one of them, but will let you get surprised by the other one. One of them is a ghost, but don't worry, you don't have to be a big fan of paranormal stories to enjoy the ghost. The ghost lives in the Inn and I think her presence fit to the old building and it's history. The ghost is only a small part of the story so don't worry, the book is still a contemporary romance.

I loved reading about the relationships between Beckett, his brothers and his mom. Their scenes together made me laugh and smile a lot. I liked all three brothers and I'm excited to read Owen and Ryder's story. Owen's will be next and it's already clear with whom he will get together. I definitely can't wait to go on with the series and read more of the three brothers, the women they love and Boonsboro.

Beautiful!

Loved the book! The cozy, relaxed pace, the lovely setting and the sweet romance worked perfectly for me and made me excited for more books in the series.
I would recommend this book to all fans of cozy and romantic books.

68 of 78 people found the following review helpful: 2.0 out of 5 stars I love Nora Roberts, but had a hard time with this book, November 5, 2011 I love Nora Roberts; I have read all her books and I enjoy the amount of detail and research in her stories. This book is typical Nora and it is decent if you are a fan. I agree that her research is what changes from book to book and that it feels like she pulls character descriptions out of her archives. My biggest gripe is how this novel reads like a 300+ page travel brochure for her real-life hometown and businesses. I am sure I would enjoy staying at the Inn Boonsboro, but the constant cross-promotion buries the romance. I like travel books, but do not package one as a romance novel and try to fool me. The Inn was the main character; the hero and heroine felt like the supporting cast. I think Nora does much better without a financial stake in the novel's setting. The only real difference is the shameless self-promotion of her various businesses in the real town of Boonsboro. I love Nora, but this really isn't worth buying. #1: The Fiery Cross

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

101 of 104 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars It's all in the details, November 25, 2001 I finished The Fiery Cross a couple of days ago, and while it's not my favorite of the series (nothing beats the first one), I enjoyed it thoroughly. Diana Gabaldon has taken us back once again to the eighteenth century and revealed it to us in glorious detail. I can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon than with Jamie and Claire Fraser. I also appreciated this book greatly as a further deepening of Roger and Brianna's story. In the previous books, Bree wasn't really an interesting character to me - but here her character is fleshed out considerably. Likewise Roger - although his character was well-developed before this book, he endures hardships here that test his self-image and strength of character. And of course, Claire and Jamie are the same wonderful characters as ever - you really see here how their love has developed over the years.

I understand the complaints of some that this book doesn't have a plot, that it moves too slowly, etc. Those are valid points to make - there's nothing really earth-shattering that happens in this installment, although you know that something (the Revolution) is looming just beyond the horizon. For me, though, the beauty of the book was in the details - the very fact that this is for the most part a book about everyday life. More than in any of the rest of the books, Diana revels in these details. While some may find all this detail "boring," it allows us to really understand what life was like in the past, and it fleshes out all of the characters immeasurably. I closed the book feeling satisfied and yet craving more - I can't wait to find out how the entire saga ends! The Fiery Cross is a book for true fans who love these characters.

64 of 66 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, April 16, 2002 Before anyone is discouraged by the negative reviews here, I hope they will read this one.

I don't understand when someone says nothing happens in this book. Granted, the action is subtle in the form of politics and intrigue, however it is still there. We finally get to see the everyday life of these wonderful people as they try to find a place to call their own. They have spent so much of their lives running from one thing to another, not really having a home that this is refreshing. People adore these books because of Diana's amazing ability of bringing characters to life, yet bash this book for the same reasons. When you nurse and have small children, bodily functions are something you have to deal with. One of the most humourous sections is Roger and Bree dealing with potty training Jemmy.

There is plenty of action, political intrigue and drama. We travel with Jamie and the militia, find some new characters, deal with almost losing not just one but two of the major characters and see the return of another. Some loose ends are tied up (wondering about the Tory gold and just who was Otter Tooth?), some are still hanging and new ones pop up (who was that with Laoghaire in the arbor and what about Claire's nighttime visitor?). The action is there if you care to read it.

It's true this book was split in two, Ms. Gabaldon didn't get as far as she would have liked with it, but it is a wonderful book all the same. I finished it in 2 days and had to reread it almost immediately. It is a slower starting novel than previously, something like Dragonfly in Amber, but still filled with the characters I have grown to love. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

39 of 41 people found the following review helpful: 2.0 out of 5 stars Patched Together, January 5, 2002 This book, as well as the end of Drums of Autumn, has a decidedly taped-together feel. Ms. Gabaldon has said, with some pride, in various interviews, that she never uses an outline or flow chart to make a "big picture" of her plot. Apparently, she writes various chapters as they occur to her and then, at the end, puts them in some sort of order. This approach, which worked pretty well in the first 3 books, has now produced some very mediocre stuff.

Fiery Cross is admittedly a "bridge book" between the first 4 novels and the final one. My bet is that Ms. Gabaldon knows exactly what will be in the last book and chose a few segments to put out as "cliff hangers" in the end of Fiery Cross. Then, she filled in the first 2/3 of the book with the results of her research, adding vignettes of daily life and a few tidbits of the storyline to keep readers going. The result is a meandering book with very little forward motion. Parts of it are painfully drawn out and add very, very little. Please rethink your approach, Ms. Gabaldon. We love to read about Jamie and Claire and will indeed read practically anything (even Fiery Cross) to get it. But don't we deserve better, after waiting so long?

#6: Treachery In Death

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

85 of 89 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars A great and very entertaining how to get the bad cops story, February 16, 2011 After closing a case as primary Detective Peabody is on a roll and excited for more.

#10: Slave to Sensation: Psy-Changeling Series, Book 1

103 of 105 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely fantastic!!, September 5, 2006 Imagine a world in which all inhabitants are either shape shifters (known as changelings) or Psy. Psy have varying powers and are interconnected through the PsyNet but the Silence has bred all emotions out of them. However, there is one Psy who is different....

Sascha Duncan has always hidden her inner core as she knows she is a broken Psy and would be sent for rehabilitation if this were discovered. Treated as a cardinal due to her mother's high position on the Council, Sascha is placed in charge of a joint business venture between the Psy and the DarkRiver leopards- the first joint venture between the Psy and changelings.

Lucas Hunter is DarkRiver's Alpha and he has a secret agenda. A Psy serial killer is stalking changeling women and one of his pack lost his sister to this vicious killer. Lucas' plan is to infiltrate the PsyNet through Sascha to obtain the killer's identity but he never expects to find a Psy who feels emotions. War is about to break out between changeling and Psy as the changelings believe the Psy are protecting a killer. Sascha and Lucas will have to learn to work together quickly as one of the SnowDancer's women has been kidnapped by the psychopathic Psy and her time is running out.

Nalini Singh is a relative newcomer to the romance scene but her stunning paranormal, SLAVE TO SENSATION, is sure to garner her many new fans! The plotline is intriguing and provides a very refreshing approach to both the psychic and shape shifter themes. Keep a box of Kleenex handy, however, as you will be moved to tears as this story packs a very powerful punch!

SLAVE TO SENSATION is a superb story demonstrating the power of love and physical touch. The Psy have made every effort to create a world of logical and emotionless beings similar to Star Trek's Spock. Instead, beings with no moral conscience are being formed as exemplified by the serial killer preying on the changeling women. Love and physical touch can be very soothing and healing and Ms. Singh provides an exemplary story demonstrating this vividly to the reader.

Nalini Singh breathes life into her characters and even secondary characters, such as Tamsyn, have an unexpected depth to them. This story, although complete in and of itself, is wide open for sequels as the reader will want to know more about the fabulous cast of characters created by Ms. Singh. One can only hope that a sequel is in the works as SLAVE TO SENSATION is easily one of the best books published this year in the paranormal genre.

SLAVE TO SENSATION is highly recommended and this reviewer cannot rave enough about how wonderful this book truly is. Sascha is one of the strongest, most endearing characters to come along in quite awhile and her acceptance of herself and her relationship with Lucas provides the reader with numerous gut-wrenching and heart-warming moments. If you read only one book this year, SLAVE TO SENSATION quite simply must be that book!

33 of 33 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Seamless Blend of SciFi and Paranormal Romance, December 21, 2006 Sascha Duncan is a member of a race known for their emotional detachment, cold precision and deadly sharp minds. Only Sascha isn't like other Psy. She feels powerful emotion and she grows worried she may soon not be able to repress the building surge. A business meeting with changeling Lucas Hunter, the alpha of the DarkRiver leopards, lures her even closer to the edge of certain discovery. As she is assigned as the Psy contact for the ensuing project Lucas's company takes on, she soon begins to fear grave repercussions from her people.

Lucas feels something different about Sascha--she's not like other Psy. It doesn't take long for the dominant male to begin asserting his blatant interest in her in traditionally pack ways. Could her mysterious differences be the key his and a rival pack's have been looking for? A serial killer has targeted changeling women, and the packs believe the killer to be Psy. As a Psy with connections amongst her race, Sascha will become the only saving grace in a race against time to stop two opposing groups on the brink of war. Her and Lucas's efforts will bring them to some shocking realizations as well as some heated and sensually stimulating encounters.

The first impression of this romance was that it combined an awesome feel of not only paranormal elements, but sci-fi as well. Lucas's pack dynamics will ring somewhat similar to other paranormal romances, while having their own unique qualities at the same time, most notably their love for one another and family dynamics. The chilling addition of the Psy brings to mind a more futuristic sense with their sparse and utilitarian lifestyles. There are some very interesting twists to the plot that makes good use of the pacing throughout the book, making for a very hard to put down read. Sascha is a heroine readers may sympathize with in her plight to become fully herself, while Lucas is so wonderfully sexy in his concern for her welfare. Look for the sequel, Visions of Heat (March 6, 2007) about Psy member Faith NightStar and changeling Vaugn D'Angelo

Where you are connected with others by a mental link resembling the Internet as we know it now but in your mind. And is so intertwine that to try to "disconnect" could mean your death or rehabilitation. And rehabilitation is nothing short of a lobotomy.

That is the world that Sascha Duncan was born into she is "Psy". And Sascaha is flawed she feels and everyday she must fight this "breakdown" or she may face being "rehabilitated".

Changelings and Humans have coexisted with the Psy, but it's an fragile existence. Which is about to become even more uncomfortable. If what they suspect is true, that the killer preying on changeling women is a Psy, that the Psy Counsel is covering up these murders, but quit possibly is also a Counsel member.

Lucas Hunter is a changeling and the Alpha leader of Leopard pack DarkRiver. He is determined to expose this killer, and cover up. When he see a chance at getting more information as he and Sascha are brought together to work on a housing project.

The more Lucas and Sascha work together, Sascha is finding herself becoming involved in the changeling world of touch and emotion. And she soon realizes that she can no longer go on pretending indifference, even if it means her death.
Lucas is also finding out the Sascha is not like other Psy and as he begins to break Sascha defenses he is finding it harder and harder to just see her as way into the Psy's close knit society. He also wants to be the one to show her what other pleasure's she's missed out of. And that he wants to protect her as if she is part of his pack.

As Lucas and Sascha race to find a serial killer before a war breaks out between Psy and Changeling. They may be running out of time themselves.
